![]() ![]() Its individual entries detail the technologies and philosophies of the times that led some great (and not so great) minds to think the ridiculous was achievable. Readers will come away with a smattering of historical information in several scientific and cultural fields, but it's presented in such a way that they'll feel like experts. Examining the most outrageous predictions from the last 100 years in entertaining, bite-sized descriptions, 'Your Flying Car Awaits' is organized by type (transportation, the human body). Milo's tone is amiably conversational, filled with casual asides such as the discovery that "the electric car was also the flavor of the month more than one hundred years ago." He delves into the work of some famous visionaries, from Paul Ehrlich to Hal Lindsey but refrains from mocking even those who were completely off the mark. Sometimes the wrong guesses even contradict themselves: airplanes would never work, conventional wisdom once ran once they'd proven successful, people believed they'd be fast enough to cover the globe in mere hours. ![]() Milo explains why these and dozens of other predictions never came to fruition in a wide-ranging survey that covers everything from atomic energy (which some scientists predicted would never work out) to Puerto Rican statehood. There was a time when people thought future generations would be living in cities topped by geodesic domes, and that all babies would be born in mechanical incubators, probably after having their DNA selected for better intelligence or physical attractiveness. ![]()

5/30/2023 0 Comments Books by jason rekulak![]() ![]() ![]() (I did read The Outsider, which I enjoyed, but not enough to make me want to read more of his books.) Apart from him, however, no contemporary writer comes to mind. How many authors write ghost stories these days? There is Stephen King, of course, the master of horror and supernatural thrillers, but I have not really been a fan. The book is a ghost story, which, in itself, is so unusual. I had not heard of its author before, and while I picked up the book on the basis of a recommendation in a magazine, I didn’t have high hopes, given the number of books I had picked up recently that I couldn’t read past a few pages. I have been having trouble getting into a book lately, so I was thrilled to find that once I started reading Hidden Pictures, it hooked me enough to want to continue reading until I finished it. ![]() ![]() The mystery, suspense, and beauty of the characters make for a compelling and stunning read. It’s a gorgeous bicycle basket of a novel wherein there are many things that delight my big gay heart, including bicycles and the divided skirts in which to ride them ferrets and novelty rat pyjamas surprising cravats and haircuts full tilt journalling for justice (and love) scandalous novels self-naming swooning sisters, and running away from – and towards – them and a cornucopia of true love, of every kind and queerness. So says… " Nettleblack arrives breathlessly, wholly itself, yet also winding down the strange and brilliant bent lanes previously ridden by Sylvia Townsend Warner and Robert Aickman. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Half bad novel![]() ![]() Lots of talk of Nathan's father, a notorious black witch who has killed 193 witches and eaten many of their hearts to absorb their special powers. One story involves a black witch going mad and biting off her own tongue. There's much talk of a war between white and black witches where black witches are constantly hunted, tortured, and killed. This particular brand of witch culture is pretty violent overall. There are two sad deaths and the deaths of a few enemies. When he escapes his problems aren't over. ![]() He's beaten repeatedly, held down and branded, held captive with an acid wristband and neckband - the wrist band nearly eats through his wrist, forced to strip monthly for inspections, given tattoos that pierce bone, and chained to the bottom of a van on a journey where he's forced to sit in his own sick and pee. The main character, Nathan, is a witch and a minor who's treated horribly for most of the book. ![]() 5/30/2023 0 Comments Books by ellie terry![]() ![]() Partially in verse and partially in prose with two intertwined points of view, Ellie Terry's affecting debut will speak to a wide audience about being true to oneself. Lucinda, an extraordinarily foolish fairy, bestows on baby Eleanor the gift of obedience, condemning her to a childhood in which she's compelled to follow every order, no matter how casually given. Levine plays her debut expansion of the Cinderella story as a straight-well, nearly straight-romance, sloughing off its layers of Freudian symbolism and creating a lively, stubborn heroine to keep the action tumbling along. ![]() ![]() ![]() Maybe he will have the answers she so desperately seeks before she kills someone.
